Biomimetic Fillings

Protect and restore your teeth

Biomimetic Fillings Explained

Biomimetic fillings are dental fillings that are hand sculpted and designed to look and feel as close as possible to your original natural teeth. They are a restorative dental procedure that is done to restore your original tooth structure while protecting you from further tooth decay damage.

Quote:

“Biomimetic fillings are an art form. They are not just chunky “lumps” placed into your teeth to stave off dental decay. Instead, biomimetic fillings restore your teeth with the least amount of damage done.”

Biomimetic Fillings Benefits

The immediate benefits of biomimetic fillings are:

  • Realistic dental fillings that mimic the original appearance, strength and function of your own teeth;
  • Protects your teeth from further damage from cavities with minimally invasive techniques;
  • Undamaged natural tooth structure will be preserved;
  • Any drilling required will be done in a minimally invasive way, sometimes even without any local anesthesia required
  • Can usually be done in a single dental visit.
  • Biomimetic fillings that are worn down or chipped are easily repairable.

Types of Dental Filling Materials

If you are looking to replace your old, worn-down or leaky dental fillings, the following is a list of dental filling materials that are commonly used in Singapore.

Please do note that depending on the training and practice philosophy of the dentist, these different filling materials may not always be applied to the tooth in the most biomimetic or minimally invasive way.

Case selection and proper indications and contraindications depending on a patient’s unique circumstances will always prevail.

  • Direct Composite Resin
  • Indirect Ceramic inlays or onlays
  • Indirect Gold or Cast Metal inlays or onlays
  • Direct Glass Ionomer

Biomimetic Fillings Treatment Duration

A typical biomimetic fillings treatment duration varies according to the number of fillings you require, as well as the location of your fillings.

Complex Biomimetic fillings that require multiple layers of buildup to restore larger tooth defects will also take more time to sculpt in the mouth.

In certain select situations, it could even take less time than other dental restoration procedures if very minimal to no drilling is required and if no local anesthesia is required.

Elite Dental Group is a dental clinic that has a special focus on biomimetic and minimally invasive dentistry. Our dentists are trained to work with teeth to restore their natural durability and function with minimally invasive procedures as the default first-step measure, prior to more aggressive treatment modalities.

Many of our patients appreciate this approach as we try to preserve as much healthy natural tooth structure as much as possible in our treatment plans, whilst balancing that against the effectiveness of treatment overall.

At Elite Dental Group, we use biomimetic dental fillings to restore teeth with a focus on functional restoration, esthetics, and durability while aiming to minimize complications. Our team utilizes established techniques and technologies to provide a comfortable treatment process.

What is the difference between regular dental fillings versus biomimetic fillings?

Regular dental fillings are typically made out of tooth coloured dental materials such as composite resin or glass ionomer.

They are usually placed to fill a cavity after decay removal or to repair a tooth that has been chipped or damaged. They may appear as an off white or beige coloured patch that blends in with the color of your tooth.

Biomimetic fillings fulfill the same purpose as dental fillings.

However, the main difference is that biomimetic fillings are often sculpted in layers with adhesive techniques that aim to mimic the appearance and function of your natural teeth.

These minimally invasive techniques aim to achieve a final result whereby a biomimetic filling could be more durable, less sensitive and more realistic in terms of strength and appearance as compared to a conventional regular dental filling.

What is the difference between biomimetic fillings and dental crowns?

Biomimetic fillings preserve more natural tooth structure and are often used to restore small to medium-sized cavities or tooth damage.

Biomimetic fillings do not last permanently and are also subject to wear and tear. Although they are built to last for many years, the longevity of biomimetic fillings is dependent on factors such as your oral hygiene and teeth grinding habits, your lifestyle habits, regular maintenance visits to the dentist as well as the size and location of your restoration.

Dental crowns cover the entire visible portion of the tooth and are usually used when a tooth has undergone extensive damage or root canal treatment. Dental crowns are often indicated when more minimally invasive techniques are not suitable for the unique circumstances of the patient and require fairly extensive tooth preparation. When done well, dental crowns can last for years, but they are generally more costly than dental fillings.

How long do biomimetic fillings last?

Most biomimetic fillings can last for years if done carefully by an experienced dentist, and with regular 6-monthly maintenance care and oral hygiene practices. Biomimetic fillings are built to last and are usually the preferred option for long-lasting dental restorations without the use of a dental crown.

Can biomimetic fillings last 30 years?

Yes it is possible for biomimetic fillings to last 30 years if the treatment was rendered well and with the right post-treatment maintenance care and oral hygiene. In fact, many patients who have received biomimetic fillings remain symptom-free for decades.

However, not all biomimetic fillings will last 30 years. While they are designed to be durable, it is uncommon for any dental restoration to remain intact for that length of time. Regular check ups and excellent oral health and hygiene can help prolong the longevity of biomimetic fillings but you might have to replace them after some time due to natural wear and tear.

Can I use insurance for biomimetic fillings treatment?

It might be possible to use dental insurance for biomimetic fillings treatment. However, you would have to check with your dental insurance provider on the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.

Do take note that dental insurance providers may not even know the difference between a regular dental filling and a biomimetic dental filling and may require clarification from the dental surgeon prior to approving any claim application.

Can I use Medisave for biomimetic fillings treatment?

It is not possible to use Medisave for biomimetic fillings treatment as it is a non-surgical procedure. Medisave covers surgical dental procedures like dental implants, gum or bone grafting or wisdom tooth surgery.
