Guided Dental Implants Treatment Explained

Guided dental implant surgery is a technique that uses 3D CT imaging, Intra-oral scanning and specialized software to plan and perform implant placement. The process begins with a detailed 3D intra-oral scan of your jaw, which is used to create a virtual model of your mouth. This model allows your dental team to plan the ideal location, angle, and depth for your implants, taking into account factors like your bone density, nerve and sinus locations, and desired final tooth position.

Based on this virtual plan, a custom surgical guide is created. This guide fits snugly over your teeth or gums and features holes that correspond to the planned implant locations. During the surgery, your dental surgeon uses this guide to place the implants as planned, often without the need for invasive incisions or flaps.

Quote:

“Doing dental implants is more than just slotting in the implant. It requires knowing where the right location is to avoid future complications.”

Guided Dental Implants Treatment Benefits

The immediate benefits of getting dental implants with guided surgery include:

Guided implant placement:

The custom surgical guide ensures that implants are placed as planned, optimizing their position for the best functional and aesthetic results.

Minimally invasive procedure:

Guided surgery often requires smaller keyhole incisions and less tissue manipulation, resulting in less discomfort and swelling.

Shorter surgery time:

With the implant placement pre-planned, the actual surgery can be completed more quickly, reducing time in the dental chair.

Faster recovery:

Less invasive procedures typically lead to faster healing and recovery times, allowing you to return to your normal activities sooner.

Reduced risk of complications:

By avoiding critical structures like nerves and sinuses, guided surgery minimizes the risk of complications and potential implant failure.

Enhanced implant success rates:

Accurate placement and reduced trauma to surrounding tissues can lead to better implant integration and long-term success.

Can be used in complex cases:

Guided surgery is particularly beneficial for patients with limited bone volume or other anatomical challenges that make traditional implant placement more difficult.

Increased patient comfort:

With a less invasive procedure and faster recovery, patients often experience less discomfort and anxiety throughout the implant process.

Guided Dental Implants Treatment at Elite Dental

1st Visit – Consultation
Your guided implant surgery journey begins with a comprehensive consultation with one of our experienced implant dentists. During this visit, we will review your medical and dental history, discuss your goals and concerns, and perform a thorough examination of your mouth, including any missing teeth or areas of concern. We may take digital X-rays, photographs, and 3D cone beam CT scans to assess your jawbone density, nerve locations, and overall oral health. This information will help us determine if you are a good candidate for guided implant surgery and develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
Treatment Planning
Following your initial consultation, our implant dentist and dental technicians will use the data collected from your examination and scans to create a detailed, computer-generated treatment plan. This plan will include the location, angle, and depth of each implant, taking into account your jawbone anatomy, nerve positions, and desired final tooth placement. We will also design a custom surgical guide that will be used during your implant surgery to ensure accurate implant placement. This meticulous planning process is the foundation of guided implant surgery and helps ensure optimal results and a smooth, predictable treatment experience.
2nd Visit – Treatment Plan Discussion
Once your treatment plan is complete, we will schedule a second visit to discuss the details with you. During this appointment, our implant dentist will walk you through the proposed treatment, explaining each step of the process and answering any questions you may have. We will also discuss the cost of treatment, financing options, and any necessary preparations for your surgery. This visit is an opportunity for you to fully understand the benefits and risks of guided implant surgery and make an informed decision about your care. We encourage you to ask questions and express any concerns you may have, as we are committed to ensuring your comfort and confidence throughout your journey.
3rd Visit – Dental Implant Surgery
On the day of your guided implant surgery, our caring team will ensure that you are relaxed and comfortable. We offer various sedation options to help you feel at ease during the procedure. Your implant dentist will begin by securing the custom surgical guide in your mouth, which will serve as a template for implant placement. Using the guide, your dentist will create small incisions in your gum tissue and carefully place each implant in the pre-planned location, angle, and depth. The surgical guide helps minimize tissue trauma and ensures accurate implant positioning for optimal results. After the implants are placed, your dentist will close the incisions with sutures and provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. In some instances, sutures may not even be needed!
4th Visit – Implant Review
Following your guided implant surgery, we will schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and ensure that your implants are integrating properly with your jawbone. Once your implants have fully healed, we will begin the process of designing and placing your final tooth restorations, such as crowns or bridges. Our team will be with you every step of the way, providing personalized care and support.

What causes dental implant complications?

Dental implant complications can be caused by various factors, including infection, improper implant placement, insufficient bone support, or excessive pressure on the implant. Infections may occur due to poor oral hygiene or a compromised immune system.

Improper implant placement can lead to issues with the implant integrating with the bone. Insufficient bone density or volume may not provide enough support for the implant.

Excessive pressure from teeth grinding or an ill-fitting dental prosthetic can also cause complications. Additionally, certain health conditions, such as diabetes or smoking, can increase the risk of implant complications.

What are the risks of getting dental implants without guided surgery?

Freehand dental implant surgery, while still successful in many cases, carries higher risks compared to guided surgery.

The main risks include:

Inaccurate implant placement:

Without surgical guides, there’s greater potential for angular or positional deviation from the planned placement

Nerve damage:

Higher risk of accidentally hitting nerves, particularly the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw

Damage to adjacent structures:

Increased chance of affecting nearby teeth, blood vessels, or sinuses

Implant failure:

Greater likelihood of implant complications due to suboptimal positioning

Need for revision surgery:

Poor placement may require corrective procedures

Compromised aesthetic outcomes: Less predictable results, especially in the visible front teeth area

What is the difference between guided dental implants and freehand dental implants?

Guided Dental Implants:

  1. Use 3D computer imaging (CBCT scans) for detailed pre-surgical planning
  2. Employ surgical guides or templates to direct exact implant placement
  3. Offer accuracy in angle, depth, and position of implant placement
  4. Allow for minimally invasive, often flapless surgery
  5. Enable immediate loading of implants in suitable cases
  6. Provide more predictable aesthetic and functional outcomes
  7. Higher initial cost due to technology and planning

Freehand Dental Implants:

  1. Rely on the surgeon’s clinical experience and 2D X-rays for placement
  2. Involve traditional surgical techniques without computerized guidance
  3. Require opening of gum flaps to visualize the surgical site
  4. More cost-effective initial treatment option
  5. Suitable for simple, single-tooth replacements in experienced hands
  6. May require longer surgery time and more extensive tissue manipulation
  7. Higher risk of placement deviations and complications

What are the disadvantages of guided dental implants?

While guided dental implants offer accuracy, they do have some limitations:

Cost & Time:

  • Higher treatment costs due to modern planning technology and surgical guides
  • Additional pre-operative appointments for 3D scanning and treatment planning
  • More expensive than traditional freehand implant surgery

Technical Complexity:

  • Multiple workflow steps can introduce potential errors if not carefully managed
  • Less flexibility to make adjustments during surgery if unexpected conditions arise

Physical Limitations:

  • Surgical guides may limit access in tight spaces, particularly back teeth
  • Restricted visibility and irrigation during surgery
  • May not be suitable for patients with limited mouth opening or certain anatomical features

Treatment Restrictions:

  • Not ideal when extensive bone grafting or gum contouring is needed simultaneously
  • Less effective in completely toothless cases where guides rely on soft tissue support
  • May require conversion to traditional surgery if complications arise

Does Medisave cover guided dental implants treatment?

Medisave does not cover guided dental implant planning,  as it is not a dental surgical procedure. However, the actual surgical implant placement portion of guided implant treatment can still utilize Medisave benefits.
