Plasma Activated Dental Implants

Protect and restore your teeth

Plasma Activated Dental Implants Explained

Plasma activated dental implants are dental implants that have been treated with cold atmospheric pressure plasma. The main purpose of treating dental implants with plasma is to increase wettability. Wettability improves the liquid contact between surfaces, which means that the dental implant becomes more hydrophilic after the plasma is activated.

Wettability is important for dental implants as the success of dental implants is reliant on cell adhesion. When the dental implant has increased wettability, it is more adhesive to cells. This results in increased new bone formation in the tissue surrounding the dental implant, which also improves tissue integration. Increased tissue integration results in a shorter recovery period.

Quote:

“Many patients I speak to want dental implants but are less interested because of the potential long amount of time it could take to complete dental implant treatment . With plasma activated dental implants, it is possible to drastically reduce the amount of time it takes for a patient to complete treatment. With Plasma Activation, healthy patients with little to no adverse gum or bone conditions could complete treatment in potentially 6 weeks or less, compared to the average 3 to 6 months.”

At Elite Dental, the plasma activated dental implants is a supportive procedure that is done prior to the implant insertion into the jawbone. There are no changes or modifications made to the original manufactured materials or surface structures.

The activation is done by creating an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge on the dental implant. In simple words, this means that an energy field is created to increase surface energy and improve the wettability of the implant. Doing so increases the interaction of proteins and cells with the dental implant surface on a molecular level to help enhance recovery speeds.

Plasma Activated Dental Implants Treatment Duration

Asked
Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Check out our FAQ section for common inquiries and helpful information to guide you.

Are plasma activated dental implants safe?

Yes, plasma activated dental implants are safe and aid with better recovery speeds.

The plasma does not do anything to modify the original form and function of the dental implant. All it does is create a more hydrophilic surface to increase wettability of the dental implant. All of which promotes faster osseointegration and thus, better recovery speeds with greater predictability.

How long does plasma activation of dental implants last?

Based on research studies done by Plasmapp, the plasma activation effect of dental implants lasts for a few hours to a few days post insertion of the implant.

As such, plasma activation is usually done before the dental implant procedure. The active plasma improves bone formation and implantation compared to a dental implant without plasma activation.

What is the difference between plasma activated dental implants and dental implants without plasma activation?

Research studies have shown that plasma activated dental implants improves recovery times post-implant placement. This reduces the amount of time needed for the final restoration placement (dental crown placement) to less than 6 weeks.

What are the potential risks of plasma activated dental implants?

There are no known risks of plasma activated dental implants. Instead plasma activated dental implants should mitigate risk factors associated with some dental implant treatments, by helping improve bone healing around dental implants.

According to some research papers (refer to links below), plasma activated dental implants can not just reduce the risks of bacterial colonization, post-implant placement but also promote faster osseointegration for faster recovery.

Does Medisave cover plasma activated dental implants treatment?

No Medisave does not cover plasma activated dental implants as it is a non-surgical procedure. However, the plasma activation of dental implants is available at no additional cost at dental clinics like Elite Dental Group.
